MELAKA: The service and sacrifices made by teachers in educating our youth are invaluable and should always be remembered.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron, said this while visiting his former teacher, Yew Gin Gee,75, to wish him a Happy Chinese New Year, here today.

Idris and his wife, Datin Seri Fadilah Abdullah spent about 40 minutes at the home of the former Chemistry teacher, who also was Idris's rugby trainer during his school days Muzaffar Syah Science Secondary School (MOZAC), .

Other former MOZAC (1979-1983) students who were also present at Yew's home in Taman Semabok Permai included Datuk Jamil Aripin, Ali Kasmin, Datuk Dr Ismail Sagap, Zaid Ismail and Elina Mohamad.

Looking back on his schooldays with Yew as his mentor, Idris said his teacher was responsible for encouraging and improving his rugby skills and was proud that his school were champions in Rugby for nine consecutive years

"I still remember Yew telling me that I was silly to practice so hard during training sessions only to play 10 minutes in an actual game because I was injury prone. I always remembered his words to be careful to this very day, "he said.

Meanwhile, Yew, 75, was overwhelmed by the visit from his former students who are all successful in their respective fields and are community leaders.

"They are all good and I think rugby was quite popular in MOZAC because players were allowed to leave their hostel three times a week to practice on the field," he said.

Earlier, Idris and his entourage also visited their former Physics subject teacher, Tan Peng Heng, at Taman Merak Mas, Bukit Katil, here.
