Opposition needs to abide by Federal Court's decision [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged all parties, especially those from the opposition, to comply with the decision of the Federal Court in regards to the delineation of the constituencies being implemented by the Election Commission (EC).

This he said as the court decision is based on the country’s legal system and the Federal Constitution.

“We have to respect the court’s decision and the follow-up action should be taken by the EC. We as a government must also abide by any decision made by the court.

“Political parties have to abide by the court’s decision because it is based on the legal system and guidelines in the (Federal) constitution.”

Zahid was speaking to reporters after the soft launch of the 16th edition of the Defence Services Asia Exhibition and Conference (DSA) 2018 as well as the National Security Asia 2018 (NATSEC), here today.

Present was Defence minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein; deputy Home Affairs minister’s - Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed and Datuk Masir Kujat.

Yesterday, the Federal Court ruled that the EC's proposal to implement the re-delineation of parliamentary constituencies and the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) could not be revised by way of a judicial review.

Chief Judge, Tun Md Raus Sharif, who chaired the three judge panel, said the EC’s action in relation to the delimitation of affairs is not binding on any party and therefore cannot be amended by judicial review.

He said this in the decision to reject two applications submitted by two DAP Members of Parliament from Perak and seven voters from Melaka. They sought the Federal Court's permission to appeal against the decision by the court of appeal, which did not favour them on judicial review.
