Mental patient takes ambulance for joyride around Kuching

KUCHING: A man, said to be a mental patient, spent an hour driving a stolen ambulance around Kuching before he was finally apprehended near Wisma Saberkas, on Monday evening.

In the 12.50pm incident, the man, 36, had managed to sneak into a private ambulance, which was dropping off a patient at the Sarawak General Hospital before gunning the engine and fleeing with the vehicle.

Deputy Kuching police chief Superintendent Abang Junaidi Abang Annuar said they eventually managed to detain the man as well as recover the ambulance.

“Realising that the police were on to him, the man left the ambulance by Jalan Green and fled into a nearby shopping mall. He was eventually found back in the compound of the hospital.“

He said the man, who hailed from Kampung Siol Kandis, Petra Jaya, had psychological problems and has been warded at the hopsital for further examination.

“Further investigations are being done, including on how the man had gone undetected to the extent that he was able to drive away with an ambulance,” he said.
