Public advised to be alert to rough sea conditions

TUMPAT: Members of the public are advised to be more careful and alert to the rough and uncertain sea conditions as the situations can pose danger to anyone at the beach.

The Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Nazili Mahmood said the rough sea conditions could change the coastal area and create quicksand that could cause drowning.

“We believe the drowning of five individuals a few days ago in Tok Bali beach in Pasir Puteh was due to quicksand that was created with the presence of violent waves,” he told reporters after Kelantan JBPM monthly assembly and the opening ceremony of mini recreation park at Tumpat Fire and Rescue Station here, today.

Last Friday, five family members drowned while swimming at the Tok Bali beach, with the body of one of them was only found the next day (Saturday).

Nazili said it was very important for the public to be alert to the dangers of swimming in the sea especially during rough sea conditions.

“Among the safety precautions to pay attention to are to follow the instructions given, check the weather forecast before swimming, always swimming with friends and near the beach, do not run and jump into the water and only to swim between red and yellow flags,” he said. - Bernama
