No truth to 17,000 failing SPM history subject

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education (MOE) denied claims circulating on social media platforms that 17,000 candidates had failed their History paper in the 2017 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

In a statement today, the ministry said there was no such announcement from the Examination Board regarding results on the subject.

“The Ministry would like to inform the rumours circulating on social media that 17,000 candidates had failed the subject is not true.

“We urge the public to not be deceived into believing the rumours. The 2017 SPM results would be announced soon.

“We regret any inconvenience caused over the matter,” it said.

The rumour first emerged on Twitter earlier this week, with the news quickly circulating on other social media platforms.

Many netizens, especially SPM candidates, had commented on the matter, the hoping that they were not amongst the 17,000 students who failed the subject.

A total of 443,883 candidates sat for SPM nationwide across 3,363 centres that took place between Nov 6 and Dec 4, 2017.

The History subject was made a must-pass paper in SPM since 2013 along with the Bahasa Malaysia subject. Students would have to pass both papers to obtain the SPM certificate.
