Aid for new school term

TENAGA Nasional Bhd (TNB) brought cheer to 106 SK Janda Baik pupils with new school uniforms and bags.

The students were given the school necessities under the 'Program Ceria ke Sekolah', which is a continuation from its 'Back to School' programme that started in 2013.

To date, about 13,000 pupils from 800 schools have benefited from the programme.

SK Janda Baik headmistress Rosmawati Abd Rahman said there were 106 recipients from the school.

"Eighty-three of them were chosen from those eligible for the ‘Rancangan Makanan Tambahan Sekolah’ programme and another 23 are living at charity homes. The recipients also include Orang Asli pupils.

"It means a lot for the children to get new school uniforms and other necessities as this would boost their morale to strive harder and excel in their studies."

One of the parents, Zalina Mat Daud, 43, said the aid lessened the burden of parents, especially those with many schoolgoing children.

She said two of her children, Muhammad Asyraf Haikal Norisam, 11 and Nur Syafiah Norisam, 10, received the aid.

"I have seven children. Usually, my family would only buy one pair of school uniform for each child at the beginning of the school term and we would buy another pair in the middle of the year," she said.

Zalina, a housewife, said with this aid, parents were able to save on the cost of school uniforms, which could be used for other educational purposes.

She said this programme made the public feel closer to TNB, which not only focuses on the business of providing electricity to the public, but cares for the community as well.

It was a memorable day for SK Janda Baik pupils to have TNB employees visit them and teach them about electricity safety and cost-savings, as well as provide aid for selected pupils.

The pupils participated in a fun-filled session, which included a talk by TNB representatives, who reminded them on the proper safety measures to be taken when dealing with electricity.

These measures include not to trespass into TNB areas or alter wiring without help from experts, not to touch electrical items with wet hands and not to change lightbulbs without switching off the electrical supply.

One of the pupils, Siti Khadijah Ghazali, 11, said she learnt a lot from the session.

She said it was beneficial to know more about how to save electricity as some pupils might take it for granted, thus escalating the electricity bill.

Khadijah, a recipient of the aid, said she was motivated to excel in her studies with the aid from TNB.

"I want to be a good example to my younger sister."

Another pupil, Muhammad Aiman Arief Zabidi, 11, said he found the talk to be informative as it taught them about safety measures.

"We need to learn about this because it could save lives and prevent us from injury."

Aiman, who received the aid, said he looked forward to studying hard this year to prepare for his Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) next year.

"I am happy that TNB cares about us. I will excel in my UPSR and pray for success after giving my best in the examination."
