'Decision to shut down 1MDB based on business considerations, not politics'

KEPALA BATAS: The decision to shut down 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) once all its debts are settled is not politically-motivated.

Umno Information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said that as the main shareholder in the strategic investment company, the government has the right to ensure that its interests – which involve the rakyat – are well-protected.

“Prior to this, 1MDB had been the subject of all sorts of slander by the opposition, although there was no solid proof of their allegations of misappropriation.

“I personally feel that it is difficult for the company to continue operating as usual amidst all the accusations made.

“Business cannot be based on sentiment, and I am certain that the decision to close down 1MDB has nothing to do with politics,” he told a press conference this morning.

Earlier, Annuar moderated the 'Perjuangan For All' forum at Kompleks Rakyat Pinang Tunggal here.

Among the panellists were Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican and Pendang Member of Parliament Othman Abdul.

Earlier this week, 1MDB chairman Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah announced that the company will cease operations as soon as it settles all its debts.
