Hot weather drawing out snakes, venomous creatures in Kelantan

KOTA BHARU: The Civil Defence Force (APM) in Kelantan have had their hands full of late, responding to emergencies on venomous creatures found in homes and public areas.

State APM director Zainuddin Hussin said the number of complaints on the discovery of venomous creatures have surged of late due to the end of the northeast monsoon season, which signals the arrival of the dry spell and hot weather.

“Normally, when the northeast monsoon season ends, many venomous creatures, particularly snakes, will venture from their usual habitat in search of food.

“The reptiles will go to places where they can find their usual food sources which include rats, frogs and other small animals. It is not unusual for them to venture into populated areas such as people’s houses, store rooms and recreational parks,” he said.

Zainuddin said Kelantan APM recorded 6,297 cases of snake disturbances from January to December last year.

Kota Baru had the highest number of cases with 1,750, followed by Bachok (712) and Machang (607).

"In the first two months of this year, we recorded 1,189 similar cases. We believe the number could increase in the future," he said.
