Malaysians are better people in reality than social media

KOTA KINABALU: Comedian Harith Iskander believes that Malaysians are better in real life than portrayed in social media.

During his hour-long #KitaOK comedy show last night at Hakka hall, which is the second last of a nationwide tour, Harith said there is goodness and kindness in Malaysians.

“Nowadays, people are so engrossed in their smartphones to get the news, information and connecting with other people via social media.

“The algorithm (system) in social media will feed news and information based on a user’s searches, which means what they read (on their smartphones) is not really ‘news’,”he added.

Harith said people will be able to better connect with and understand others when they put down their phones. They will then realise “we are okay”.

The Johor-born comedian, 51, who was crowned the "World's Funniest Person" in 2016, recalled the support he received from Malaysians during the competition in Finland.

“When it was my turn to do the stand-up comedy, there were several Malaysians at the show who waved Malaysian flags to show their support.

“Their presence at that time motivated me to win the competition for Malaysia,”he added.

Besides going back to the Parameswara era up to the formation of Malaysia, the show also walked the audience, which included Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, down memory lane.

Also featured in last night's show were comedians Muzakir Zainal and Prakash Daniel, as well as emcee Daphne Iking.

Harith wrapped up his show by rapping a song and had the audience waving mini Jalur Gemilang flags.

Labuan will be the final “KitaOK” show tonight after Kuala Lumpur last month, Johor Baru on March 1, Melaka on March 9, Penang on March 10, and Kuching on Wednesday.
