KL Car Free Morning: Runners, cyclists luxuriate in traffic-free roads

KUALA LUMPUR: The KL Car Free Morning event attracted some 3,000 runners and cyclers to enjoy traffic-free streets in the city this morning.

The bimonthly campaign allows participants to cycle or run along a 7km route in the capital for up to two hours, free of vehicular traffic.

Other activities held in conjunction with the event were the Kayuhan Negaraku and the Ansara Run.

The event’s implementation committee chairman Datuk Naim Mohamad said although KL Car Free Morning is already in its fifth year, it is still managing to attract families and health-conscious individuals.

"Every first and third Sunday of every month, people will come (to the city) as early as 6am with their family to join this event. I even know some of the regular participants by name," he said.

Naim added that the organiser has arranged for many activities and attractions to keep participants interested and to draw in big crowds.

Ansara Run participant Shahrul Nizam Musa, who joined the event with his wife and son, said that he was so happy to participate.

"Not only did (my family) get to run, this event is a reunion for members of the Mara Junior Science College, and this is a great opportunity for us to catch up with each other," he said.

Meanwhile, Zafri Yusoff, who cycled at the event for the first time, said he was delighted by the experience.

"I just came back from the United States and I’ve been reading about this event for a few years now.

"I have always been keen on joining and cycling around KL without any traffic. It was a wonderful experience," he said.

Meanwhile, Noorizatul Ikhsan Malaki, 37, said she is looking forward to a lucky draw for participants, which will take place at the end of the event.

"This is my third time running at KL Car Free Morning. My sister and I really hope that we can win something this time around,” she added.

The event was flagged off by Naim and OCBC chief executive officer Datuk Ong Eng Bin.
