Chaos in city centre due to thunderstorm

KUALA LUMPUR: A thunderstorm in the city this evening reduced traffic to a crawl along major roads and highways, and also uprooted trees in some areas.

One such incident at Angkasapuri in Bukit Putra, caused a 2km crawl on the New Pantai Expressway, heading towards the city.

In the 5.35pm incident, the uprooted tree fell on two cars, a Proton Saga and another taxi which were headed towards Jalan Bangsar on the highway.

A fire and rescue department spokesman said rescuers arrived at the scene 13 minutes after receiving a distress call over the incident at 5.48pm.

“Fortunately, both drivers escaped unhurt but their cars were slightly damaged due to the fallen tree, ” he said.

He added that the fallen tree obstructed one of the two lanes on the expressway, which led to a massive traffic congestion.

He said a team of six firemen from Seputeh fire and rescue station who rushed to the scene cleared the fallen tree before traffic returned to normal by 6.45pm.

There was also a massive traffic jam on most major roads, including Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tun Razak.

In Johor, a storm ripped through Kampung Melayu Batu 10, Skudai about 5pm causing damage to 27 houses in the area.

Johor Baru Civil Defence Force commander Captain Mohd Aziz Jupri said no one was injured in the incident.
