Sabah not included in redelineation exercise?

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission's (EC) report on electoral boundary delineation proposal raised an eyebrow when it is discovered the exclusion of Sabah from the list.

Steven Wong (DAP-Sandakan) highlighted the absence of Sabah from the proposal upon receiving the report which was distributed to lawmakers in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said the matter sparked a question since the Sabah state assembly had, on Aug 9, 2016, approved a motion to increase its seats from 60 to 73.

"Does this mean that the 14th general election will see 60 state seats contested in Sabah, instead of 73?" Wong said at a Press conference on the sidelines of the Parliamentary session today.

EC in a statement on March 9 said the report on electoral boundary redelineation report on Federation of Malaya had been completed.

A previous report had also mentioned the redelineation proposal in Sabah had yet to complete.

The last delineation exercise was implemented in 2003. The Federal Constitution provides delineation to be carried out at least every eight years.

Earlier today, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia the motion on electoral boundary redelineation exercise has been scheduled for tabling at the Parliament on March 28.

In a related development, Ignatius Dorell Leiking (Warisan-Penampang) had sought an explanation on the matter from Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, during a winding up session of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V's royal address.

Azalina said a written answer on the matter would be issued soon. -- Reporting by Syed Umar Ariff; Rohaniza Idris; Luqman Arif Abdul Karim; Ahmad Suhael Adnan and Siti Nur Mas Erah Amran
