Owners of last remaining house on RM4.5 billion KTCC land stand their ground

KUALA TERENGGANU: The days of the last kampung house standing smack in the centre of the multi-billion ringgit Kuala Terengganu City Centre (KTCC) development appear to be numbered.

The Wan Yusop family are the only holdouts on the land earmarked for the RM4.5 billion development; and continue to stand their ground at their traditional wooden bungalow at Kampung Ladang, Tanjung, along Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin here.

House No 19 has been the talk of the town for several months now, especially after the family was reported to have asked for RM20 million in compensation in order to abandon their home.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said negotiations with the family’s representatives are ongoing, and an amicable solution will be reached.

"All the other occupants of the land have moved out and appropriately compensated.

"There is no court case involving this last house and we hope to find a solution soon,” he told NSTP.

However, family member Wan Mokhtar, 65, said that they are adamant in acquiring the RM20 million compensation for the 80-year-old property from the developer, before they would move out.

Meanwhile, heavy machinery and a large number of foreign labourers are already working on an 11-hectare piece of land surrounding house No 19, which is situated on a cape overlooking the South China Sea.
