Video of student beaten by friends during birthday 'bash' goes viral

SHAH ALAM: A Form Five student of a school here is believed to have allowed himself to be beaten by a group of friends while celebrating his birthday.

A 29-second video recording which went viral on social media shows about eight students singing “Happy birthday” to a friend in the class, before assaulting him.

The student was kicked and hit with broomsticks during the incident which occurred last month.

It is understood that this is a common tradition at the school.

However, when contacted by the NSTP, the school’s management said that it was not so.

They claimed that throwing flour was a known ritual for some students who celebrated their birthdays in school. But this isolated incident was only brought to their attention last Friday when the video went viral on social media sites.

Although school authorities have been unable to get in touch with the teenager, a report has been sent to the Selangor State Education Department.

Shah Alam district police chief, assistant commissioner Baharudin Mat Taib, however, said there were no police reports on the incident so far.

“Police have yet to receive a report on this incident. But if there is a report, we will investigate before taking further action.”

Meanwhile, deputy education minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan when met by reporters after attending Carnival #StandTogether at Setia Alam, said he has ordered the state education department to conduct an investigation and submit a report on the incident.

“We are in the midst of investigations and when it is completed, we will inform of its progress,” he said.
