Baby girl found abandoned in a box at Tawau bus stop

TAWAU: A baby girl, thought to be between six and 12 months old, has been found abandoned in a box at a bus stop in Kampung Rastamas, Jalan Apas on Saturday.

Police said she was found by a passer-by who heard a cry after alighting from a bus at 7.30am.

The baby girl, clad in pink attire, has been taken to Tawau Hospital for observation.

"The passer-by - a woman - was about to walk home when she heard a noise coming from a box nearby. Seeing the baby girl inside - alive and crying - she took her to the police station.

"Doctors at Tawau Hospital said the baby girl, weighing about 12kg, is aged between 6 and 12 months," he said.

Fadil said there was no physical injury except for some allergy-like symptoms around her neck and thigh.

The infant is currently placed at the observation ward and will be handed over to the Welfare Department soon.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child under 12-years-old.
