Man gets 4 years' jail for severely injuring wife

PETALING JAYA: A man was sentenced to four years’ jail by the Sessions Court here today for severely injuring his wife by strangling, punching, kicking and attempting to stab her in the stomach last year.

Judge Azwarnida Affandi handed down the sentence on storekeeper K.Vejeyen, 36, after he changed his plea to guilty when the case came up for mention today.

He was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to his 38-year-old wife by using a knife as a weapon which could cause death or severe injury at a condominium unit in Damansara here at 8.30pm on Dec 8, 2017.

The charge, under Section 324 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 326A of the same code, carries a maximum jail term of 20 years.

According to the facts of the case, the man had gone to his wife's house, broke the front grille and barged into the house while carrying a knife before a quarrel broke out between them.

Vejeyen had strangled, punched her nose, kicked her chest and tried to stab her in the stomach but failed.

The victim’s scream was heard by her neighbours who later caught the man.

The couple, married for nine years, has two children but are living separately.
