Putrajaya multi-purpose centre to be cordoned off on nomination day

PUTRAJAYA: Police will cordon off a 50-metre radius area around the multi-purpose centre in Presint 9 here for the 14th general election’s (GE14) nomination day tomorrow.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Rosly Hasan said the move is to ensure smooth access for party supporters to the nomination centre.

“I believe supporters from contesting parties are a mature lot who will (express) their support for their candidates in an orderly manner.

“Since they will be moving towards the centre in a big group, we urge them to exercise caution by (keeping) safety in mind,” he told the NSTP.

Rosly called on all supporters to refrain from creating trouble and adhere to instructions issued by police officers and staff stationed at the nomination centre on Saturday.

On the number of police to be deployed, he said it is difficult to provide an accurate figure, as Putrajaya police will receive reinforcements from the police contingent headquarters.

“Yesterday (Thursday), Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim (provided an) overall number of on-duty police officers and staff for tomorrow.

“Nonetheless, we here in Putrajaya will start our duties at 6am (and finish) when the nomination process is completed,” said Rosly.

Mazlan is reported to have said that 2,693 police officers and staff will be on-duty during nomination day and deployed in six districts – Sentul, Wangsa Maju, Brickfields, Dang Wangi, Cheras and Putrajaya.

A three-cornered fight is expected between incumbent Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who is also Barisan Nasional secretary-general; PKR candidate Datuk Samsu Adabi Mamat; and Pas candidate Zainal Abidin Kidam for the Putrajaya Parliamentary seat.
