GEORGE TOWN: Continuous heavy rains since yesterday evening triggered floods at several low-lying areas in the southwest district of the island.

Among the areas hit by flash floods were Teluk Kumbar, Taman Manggis, and Gertak Sanggul.

The heavy downpour began at about 8pm and the affected areas were inundated with floodwater within two hours.

The water rose to knee-level in some areas as of 11.30pm last night.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the heavy rains lasted until 4am.
