Need for RCI on Altantuya case

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Gelugor member of parliament Ramkarpal Singh wants the Royal Commission of Inquiry to reopen the murder case of Altantuya's Shaariibuu.

Ramkarpal said he wants those responsible for ordering the murder to be brought to justice regardless of their rank or position.

In his statement, he said that the ‘offer’ made by, Sirul Azhar Umar who requested a full pardon to be given to him and be allowed back in Malaysia a free man as reported by a news portal was an insult to the victim and should not be entertained.

“There is absolutely no hint of remorse from Sirul in his interview particularly when the murder was committed in such a heinous manner,” he said.

Ramkarpal also questioned a statement made by Sirul where he said he has killed others under instruction.

“The statement is contrary to his claim (earlier) that the murder of Altantuya was his only crime.

”Sirul who was a former police officer is now in Australia after he fled the country to get away from a death sentence.

“He fled from the country to Australia just before the Federal Court convicted him and Azilah Hadri of Altantuya’s murder in 2015. Despite assuring the nation that he would be extradited the previous Barisan Nasional government has done absolutely nothing to do so and he remains merely under detention by the immigration authorities there.”

He said that Australia is providing asylum for Sirul was because the country is against the death penalty punishment.

“If the death penalty is switched to life imprisonment, the Australian government will most certainly deport him to Malaysia to serve his sentence here.

He added that it was unlikely that Sirul had any personal knowledge of what transpired on the night of the murder or who ordered it, saying it was clear from the trial evidence that Azilah had played a bigger role.

“The possibility that DSP Musa Safri may have knowledge of what happened cannot be excluded as he was mentioned throughout the trial but was not called by the prosecution,” he said.

Ramkarpal said he is confident that if Sirul’s sentence to be converted to life imprisonment there would be higher chance that he would be deported to the country and sent to Kajang prison to serve his sentence.

“Once he is back on home soil, he will be obliged to cooperate in the investigation or RCI and if necessary appear as a witness against those who ordered the murder,” he said.
