Mohamed Ibrahim appointed as UTP vice-chancellor

KUALA LUMPUR: Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor (VC) of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) effective May 16.

UTP in a statement today said Mohamed Ibrahim, its fourth VC, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia and later obtained his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom.

He began his career with UTP in 1997 as a lecturer and later became the founding head of its Chemical Engineering Programme in 1998.

In 2000, Mohamed Ibrahim was appointed as director of Research and Development and Consultancy (R&DC), a position he held until 2009.

With his past experience and significant contribution while holding various management positions at UTP, he was appointed as the dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2013.

The faculty continued to progress strongly and improved its QS rating to the top 300. This year, UTP climbed 88 places and is now ranked 145th in the QS World University Rankings by Broad Subject of Engineering and Technology.

He was promoted to associate professor in 2002 and later to professor in chemical engineering in 2014. He is currently a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and holds a Chartered Engineer status with the UK Engineering Council. He is also a Fellow of Akademi Sains Malaysia.

He was entrusted by the UTP board to assume the post of deputy vice-chancellor (Academic) in 2016. The following year, he was given the responsibility to cover the duties of VC of UTP. -- BERNAMA
