Boy drowns after falling into lake while fishing

TANGKAK: A 13-year-old boy drowned after he slipped at the edge of a lake near Bandar Baru Tangkak yesterday evening.

A search and rescue team was mobilised by the Tangkak Fire and Rescue Department at 7.15pm and the remains of Muhammad Amirul Asraff Sahak, 13, were found today, not far from the spot where he fell into the lake.

Tangkak police chief superintendant Mohd Idris Samsuri said initial investigation revealed that the victim had gone to the lake for angling and was accompanied by his younger brother and two friends aged 8 and 13 years old, respectively.

“While fishing at the lake, the victim slipped and fell into the lake,” said Idris.

Idris added that the victim’s brother who was caught by surprise at what happened, panicked, and ran back home, some 700m away, to inform his father.

The father rushed to the scene and conducted a search but when he could not find the boy, he called the department for help.

Idris said initial investigation revealed the victim and his peers frequented the lake for angling activities as the area was quiet and not restricted to anyone for angling.

The victim’s remains were later taken to the Tangkak hospital for post mortem and was later claimed by his family.

The case was classified by police as sudden death.
