Heavy rain, strong wind wreak havoc in parts of Penang [NSTTV]

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Heavy downpour and strong wind during a storm wreaked havoc in several areas here early this morning.

At the KTM train station here, a glass panel at the platform came crashing down when it was hit by strong wind.

Seberang Prai police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said fortunately, no one was injured in the midnight incident.

There was also no train at the station at the time of the incident, he added.

"Workers have been despatched to clear the mess," he said.

At Uptown Perda, Ramadan traders suffered massive losses when their tents were blown away by strong wind, resulting in their goods to be drenched by the rain.

Nik Ros Azhan said several cars at the parking lot of a flat near Jalan Permatang Pauh were damaged after a tree fell on them.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department said at least 50 low-lying areas on the mainland were also flooded.

About 200 houses were also struck by the flash floods.

Among the affected areas were Kampung Padang Lalang, Kampung Perlis, Kampung Malaysia and Kampung Permatang Rawa.

Bernama reported that 24 families or 76 people have been evacuated to three flood relief centres, at Dewan Orang Ramai Perda Timur 14, Dewan JKKK Bukit Teh and Dewan Orang Ramai Machang Bubuk.

"Thirteen roads are flooded but still accessible to traffic,” Nik Ros Azhan told the news agency.

He added that strong winds and heavy rain swept over Seberang Perai Tengah from 11.30pm till 3am with the tide rising to 2.4 metres at 12.01 am.
