KOTA BARU: Kelantan is famous for its variety of sweet cookies sold during the fasting month, from simple cakes to traditional items such as akok, jala mas and bahulu.
But sweet delicacies are not the only items sold during Ramadan. A variety of chicken items such as grilled chicken are also popular.
Chicken grilled in large earthern jars is the latest attraction for food lovers here. Some traders operate their business almost every day but Mohd Jamil Hussin opens his stall only for 30 days in a year during Ramadan.
The 43-year-old said he sells grilled chicken at a stall which he set up along Kampung Surau Kota near here.
“I have been selling chicken grilled in jars only during Ramadan for the last eight years ago. I take leave from my job just to sell grilled chicken.
“Each chicken needs to be mixed with spices before it is placed inside the jars. They are grilled between 15 and 20 minutes using charcoal,” said the offshore worker.
With the help of his friend Mohd Sazazuan Abdullah, Jamil, a father of four, said he operates the business seven days a week and opens from 2.30pm till 6pm.
“We sell the chicken between RM20 and RM22 per bird depending on the size. We manage to sell between 70 and 80 a day,” he said.
Jamil said most of his customers were regulars who love the chicken’s taste.
