PM: Najib's bodyguards, police escorts withdrawn pending outcome of graft probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s bodyguards and police escorts were withdrawn by the government pending an ongoing graft investigation into the former prime minister.

However, Najib’s privileges as the country’s former top executive would be restored if he was found innocent, according to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Najib is currently being investigated over allegations of graft related to SRC International.

“I am not sure whether all (of Najib’s security aides) had been withdrawn. But he is being investigated after all. If he is found to be innocent, then all of the privileges accorded to a former prime minister will be restored,” Dr Mahathir told reporters when met outside the Bukit Aman Mosque after a buka puasa event with a number of police top brass here, today.

Najib in a Facebook today informed that his bodyguards and police escorts had been withdrawn by the government.

The former prime minister also posted pictures of him bidding farewell to his bodyguards and police escorts.

“My family and I will never forget the service, friendship and loyalty they have shown over the past nine years, including some who had been with us for 14 years since when I was the deputy prime minister.

“It can’t be denied that they were emotional and some even cried when we said goodbye,” Najib wrote.-- Report by Syed Umar Ariff, Fahmy Azril Rosli and Mohd Hasbi Sidek
