Bodyguards put themselves in the line of fire

JOHOR BARU: Bodyguards adopt several methods and strategies to reduce risk to their client.

They should have information about threats to their client to ensure better security.

International Bodyguard Association Malaysia national director and chief instructor R. Azmi discussed strategies that should have been taken by the bodyguard involved in the shooting at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today.

The bodyguard is reported to be in critical condition after he was allegedly shot by his client's husband.

The intended target is believed to be the gunman's wife.

Azmi, a retired Special Actions Unit officer, said bodyguards, once appointed, should be aware or have information about threats to their client.

"In this particular case, we must check if the bodyguard was aware that there had been threats made against his client.

"If he did, he should have increased security for his client, including deploying more than one bodyguard."

He said bodyguards must position themselves between the threat and the client at all times.

Azmi said bodyguards were required to undergo intense training and must be certified before taking to the field.

He said the injured bodyguard was not an association member.

"I know of him, but we are not close. I hope he recovers."
