PETALING JAYA: The government is required to pay compensation to Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (PLUS) following the end of the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway and Salak Expressway concessions at the Sungai Besi toll plaza, which ended on May 31.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the compensation payment is as per enshrined in the agreement with the concession.
He said the end of the toll collection only involves the Sungai Besi toll, and not the others.
“We did not discuss ending toll collection elsewhere. Only the Sungai Besi toll, as per the contract which ended on May 31,” he told the media after chairing the Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council on Friday.
On Friday, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) had announced that there would be no more toll collection for the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway and Salak Expressway at the Sungai Besi toll plaza, managed by PLUS, as of midnight.
LLM, in a statement, said with the termination of the concession period, the toll charges on all routes exiting and entering the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza will be reduced by between 1 per cent and 50 per cent (between RM 0.40 and RM1.70).
The termination is expected to benefit nearly 130,000 vehicles passing through the toll plaza on a daily basis. Users who pass through Sungai Besi toll plazas will only need to pay the tolls within the North-South Expressway (PLUS) alignment that they are traveling through. --Report by Manirajan Ramsamy,Rohaniza Idris,Veena Babulal and Mohd Nasaruddin Parzi
