5 illegal racing suspects nabbed at Gombak, Kangar motorcycle workshops

KUALA LUMPUR: Five men suspected of involvement in illegal racing were arrested at two motorcycle workshops in Selangor and Perlis on Thursday.

A source said police had obtained information from the Facebook account of one “Matt Yie” who had congratulated a racer on winning RM165,000.

“Police detected the information on Thursday via an article on a blog ‘Jowiekuendah.com’ titled ‘Selepas game RM60k pertaruhan lumba haram cecah RM160k Y15ZR bukan level rempit’ regarding the illegal race believed to be organised by two motorcycle workshops at Km218 to Km220 of the North-South Expressway.

“Acting on the information, a team from the Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department conducted two raids at the workshops in Gombak and Kangar from 7.30pm to 11pm,” the source said.

Three mechanics who were detained at the Gombak workshop admitted they were involved in the race.

“Police seized a red Yamaha Y154ZR used in the race,” the source said, adding that two men suspected of involvement in the second race were arrested at a workshop in Kangar, including the workshop owner at 10.50pm.

“Another blue Yamaha Y154ZR said to have been used in the race, was also seized,” said the source.

Investigations revealed that the race was organised by the two workshops. The winning Kangar team took home RM165,000.

“All the suspects admitted they were involved in the race as racers, mechanics and organiser that collected bets,” the source added.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) and Section 81(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
