TOKYO: The new Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor has been identified and will be announced once the Yang di-Pertuan Agong gives his consent, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad said today.
While the list of candidates was not mentioned, local media reports say former deputy governor Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus may get the job.
Nor Shamsiah became deputy governor following the retirement of Datuk Zamani Abdul Ghani on the completion of his term on 15 November 2010, after 39 years of being with the bank.
Nor Shamsiah joined the central bank in 1987 and a member of BNM’s Monetary Policy Committee and Employee Provident Fund’s investment panel.
Apart from Shamsiah, it is also speculated that Sukhdev Singh, another former deputy governor who resigned in November 2017, is also in the run for governor.
Sukhdev, who quit the bank after 31 years of service, a year ahead of his tenure ending April 2019, has never been on record in citing his true reasons for departure.
Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim, who resigned as BNM governor last week, has finished less than half of the five-year term he began in May 2016.
