Two million road users expected on the highways for Hari Raya exodus

SUNGAI BULOH: More than two million road users are expected to ply major highways two days before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Rosli Isa said as such, motorists should plan their balik kampung journey ahead and be prepared for any situations.

“Malaysians are expected to travel on those days as they want to enjoy the 50 per cent toll discount as announced by the Federal government.

“Hence, motorists need to plan for their trip and prepare for the worst. For example, on normal days, it may only take four hours to travel from Taiping to Putrajaya but on those days, it may take up to eight hours.

“However, we do expect smoother traffic for this year’s balik kampung exodus as the school holidays have just started and some may already make their way back,” he told a press conference at the Road Safety Campaign and Ops Bersepadu at the Sungai Buloh north bound R&R today.

Rosli also gave tips to road users to fight microsleep, which is one of the main factors contributing to fatal road accidents.

“Microsleep normally happens when one is driving on straight road or an hour after meal.

“A driver or motorcyclist may fall asleep for just between two and 30 seconds, which may cause them to crash into other vehicles or road dividers.

“Do not force yourself to continue driving when that happens. Take a rest. Stop the car or ask someone else to drive when you are tired to avoid any road accidents,” he said.

He also warned road users to adhere to traffic rules and not break any laws.
