5,000 traffic summonses issued in 4 days of Ops Selamat

KUALA LUMPUR : City police have issued more than 5,000 summonses to motorists for various offences in the first four days of the Ops Selamat Raya 13/18 here, since its launch on June 8.

City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya said the 5,000 summonses were issued to road users in Kuala Lumpur.

Speaking to reporters after Ops Selamat 13/18 KL at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan this afternoon, Zulkefly said although traffic in the city was expected to be lighter this Raya, their focus would be mainly at 10 accident prone hotspots with higher vehicle volume.

This he said was to ensure the safety of road users and to ensure that no unexpected incidents take place that can cause traffic congestions.

"This balik kampung season, drivers should make sure their vehicle is in good condition and they are also fit to drive the distance, before starting their journey.

"On top of that, drivers must learn to 'anticipate' what the vehicles in front, behind, or at the sides may do. This is very important because by anticipating, they can prepare themselves on their next move, in case the other drivers make any sudden moves," he said reminding motorists to be safe on the road this festive season.

Among the main offences which make up the number of summonses, he said, were speeding, using the phone while driving, jumping queue, overtaking on the double line and beating the red light.

Zulkefly said on an average there were about 150 to 200 accidents in the city daily.

"However, during festive seasons it fluctuates up and down by about 10 percent. For instance the first two days the trend climbs upwards, then the third and fourth day, we see a decline in the number of cases by 10 percent," he said describing the traffic trend in the city for holiday breaks.

Meanwhile, in this morning's ops at the TBS, Zulkefly said about 50 buses and motorists were checked with 37 summonses issued on the spot.

"The ops started at 8am and ended slightly after 12pm with about 50 bus drivers being checked for drug abuse. All off them tested negative," he said.

Zulkifly said the joint operation between the Land Public Transportation Commission, City Narcotics Division, Road Transport Department and Police was part of the safety campaign and operation for this Hari Raya celebrations and school break.

Other than that, Zulkefly said police were also having periodic checks and road blocks at public transportation terminals, shopping areas and city exit points.

Police were also expected to conduct more road safety checks at bus terminals in the city, mainly Hentian Duta and TBS throughout the festive break.
