MRA medical director in critical condition following Aidilfitri crash in Pahang

KUALA LUMPUR: The medical director of the Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA) who was seriously injured in an accident on the East Coast Expressway on Hari Raya eve has successfully undergone two operations at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Hospital (HoSHAS) in Temerloh, Pahang.

Dr Zafri Ismadi Mohd Anis, who is also a paediatrician at the same hospital, was on his way to Bangi to celebrate Aidilfitri when the accident occurred near Bentong at about 7pm.

He had apparently lost control of his vehicle while avoiding a lorry, and suffered fractures to both legs, a stage 4 spleen injury, and damage to his lungs.

“He is now being treated at the intensive care ward after doctors performed two surgeries to remove his spleen and install iron implants on his fractured legs.

“The surgeries so far have been successful, but he is still in critical condition and is breathing through a respiratory machine,” MRA secretary-general Dr Shahrizal Azwan Samsudin said in a statement today.

He described Dr Zafri as an active humanitarian relief worker and committed child specialist who has volunteered in numerous domestic and international missions with the MRA.

His most recent humanitarian effort was as part of a mission to Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, which was organised by the Health Ministry to treat Rohingya refugees there.

“The MRA appeals to all Malaysians to pray for Dr Zafri’s full recovery,” he added.
