KUANTAN: A man and his grandson were killed and six others injured in a three-vehicle crash at Km233.6 of the East Coast Expressway (LPT1) near the Kuantan Rest and Relaxation (R&R) stop late last night.

Hamzah Hitam, 77 and his grandson Muhammad Hairi Kosni, 18, who were backseat passengers in a Perodua Alza were killed on the spot in the 12.05am accident.

The driver of the Alza – Johor Baru Social Welfare Department (JKM) employee Kosni Kamit, 54, and his wife, Nor Haliza Hamzah, 50, suffered head injuries.

Kosni’s other son, Muhammad Haziq, 24, sustained a broken arm, while his sister-in-law, Nor Haslina, 52, incurred light injuries.

Four people in a second Perodua Alza – its driver, Faiq Ibrahim, 28; his wife Norhidayah Boriak, 25; their newborn son, Muhammad Firash Nawfal, 6 months; and Mohd Firdaus, 28, escaped unharmed.

Occupants of the third vehicle, a Toyota Hilux – Wazir Baharudin, 46, and his friend Muhammad Ishak Ismail, 54, suffered light injuries.

“The bodies of the deceased were sent to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for post-mortems, while the injured were sent to the same hospital for treatment,” said state Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Superintendent Kamarulzaman Jusoh.

The Perodua Alza with five passengers was on its way from Rengit Johor to Kelantan when the accident occurred.

According to Kamarulzaman, upon reaching the accident scene, the Alza driver slowed down his vehicle, which caused it to be rear-ended by the Hilux.

“The impact of the crash caused the first Alza to skid and crash into the second Alza in front of it,” he added.

The accident is being investigated according to Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
