Overlapping 1MDB probe between cops and SC cleared, says former AG

KUALA LUMPUR: There have been some overlaps regarding the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) probe between the police and the Securities Commission (SC), former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman said.

However, Abu Talib who also heads the Special Committee on 1MDB said, the issue have been settled.

“Our jurisdiction is to ensure there is no overlapping on the investigation and they have to brief to us on the progress.

“Yes, (there were) overlapping between SC investigations and the police. We have identified but we have also clarified,” he told reporters when met at the Ilham Tower here today, without explaining further on the overlapping matters.

Earlier, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Amar Singh had met with Abu Talib, but refused to share the gist of the meeting with the media.

Abu Talib later told reporters that Amar and officers from the SC had attended a meeting with the committee where they discussed on activities and investments relating to 1MDB.

“They (Amar and SC officers) briefed the committee on the progress of the 1MDB investigation. It’s been (going) very well and things are getting clearer.

“The thing is, you can’t put a time limit (for the police and SC to conclude the investigation). It may seem simple but it can be complicated because it involves so many parties and offshore transactions,” he said.

On June 22, Abu Talib said the initial investigation paper on 1MDB has already been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further consideration and instructions.

The 1MDB investigation committee includes PwC Risk Assurance Services partner Nik Shahrizal Sulaiman; Naqiz Partners senior partner Syed Naqiz Shahabuddin Syed Abdul Jabbar; Financial Services Authority Indonesia senior adviser Faris Rabidin; and Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism director and founder Cynthia Gabriel.

The investigation committee was formed by the Council of Eminent Persons, which is led by former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.
