Two cops among four arrested over Simpang Ampat gang robbery

KUALA LUMPUR: Two policemen stationed in Seberang Prai were among four people arrested for their alleged involvement in a gang robbery at a project site near Simpang Ampat.

Sources indicated that the arrests were connected to the robbery of a 26-year-old Nepali man, identified as Fozle Rabbi, which took place on the night of Dec 2.

One of the suspects reportedly confessed to entering the complainant's dormitory under the pretence of conducting a drug search, using information provided by an accomplice who served as a security guard in the area.

During the unauthorised search, a suspicious bottle believed to be associated with drug consumption was discovered.

The 36-year-old suspect, who is a police corporal, allegedly demanded a RM1,000 in cash from the victim to avoid arrest.

However, the victim could not meet the demand, and in retaliation, the policeman took the victim's mobile phone and took RM500 in cash.

Police confirmed that the arrests involved two members of the Seberang Perai Tengah District police headquarters and were carried out at four locations.

During the operations, several items were confiscated, including a Redmi mobile phone, a pair of handcuffs, a police vest, a Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck seized from the suspect, and a Yamaha LC motorcycle taken from another suspect.

A remand request is expected to be submitted soon for the suspects.
