Thai Islamic Religious Council says Thai child bride issue resolved

KOTA BARU: The Narathiwat Islamic Religious Council has deemed the issue involving the marriage of an 11-year-old Thai girl to a 41-year-old Malaysian as closed.

This was after the council recorded the statement of the 11-year-old girl at its office in Sungai Golok on Wednesday.

Its assistant registrar Hashim Yusoff said the girl was accompanied by her parents when she came to the office.

"The religious officer took down her statement. He also collected several documents related to the marriage from her parents," he told NSTP today, adding that the girl spent some 40 minutes having her statement recorded.

Hashim, who was the Kadi who married the girl and the Malaysian man on June 18, said he believed the issue which went viral in Thailand and Malaysia, was now resolved after the girl's statement was taken.

"This issue is considered closed. The Malaysian man was also fined by the Syariah court in Gua Musang recently," he said.

The child bride and her husband, a rubber trader, had tied the knot at a mosque in Kampung Padang Nyor near Sungai Golok, Thailand on June 18.

On Monday, the man was fined RM1,800 by Gua Musang Lower Syariah Court for marrying without approval and entering into a polygamous marriage without consent.

Syariah judge Mohd Surbaineey Hussain fined the accused RM900 for each offence after he pleaded guilty to both charges.

He was charged under Section 19 and Section 24 of the Kelantan Islamic Family Enactment 2002 which carries a maximum RM1,000 fine or two months jail.
