KUALA LUMPUR: Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming and Batu Pahat MP Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon have been elected Dewan Rakyat’s new Deputy Speakers.
Mohd Rashid and Nga received 171 and 124 votes respectively, defeating the opposition’s choice of Beluran MP Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee. Kiandee polled 93 votes.
Earlier, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof mooted that the voting be conducted via secret ballot.
Dewan Rakyat Secretary Datuk Seri Rosmee Hamzah said that the deputy speakers were proposed by Pakatan Harapan in a letter by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on July 2.
She added that opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also submitted Ronald’s name on the same date.
