Dewan Rakyat Speaker stresses importance of health checks following MP collapse

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has reiterated his calls for members of parliament (MP) to conduct health checks, stressing that it was compulsory.

In saying this, Johari made a reference to an MP who had collapsed yesterday and was admitted to the hospital. He, however, did not disclose who the MP was.

"As of today, only 196 MPs and five senators in the administration have undergone health check-ups. Hence, those who have not done yet, please do so.

"I will also extend the check-ups (deadline) until next Tuesday, Nov 14, so you can contact the parliament clinic for further details.

"I request and urge that the check-ups be conducted as I was made to understand that one of us collapsed and was admitted to hospital yesterday," he said when opening the Dewan Rakyat session, this morning.

Previously, Johari reportedly said that during his 15 years as an MP, he had witnessed a total of 11 MPs die during the period.

Therefore, he insisted that all MPs visit health clinics in parliament and private facilities to undergo examinations as detailed in the letter sent to them.
