KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) vice-president Dr Hasan Baharom is urging the government to reintroduce the Parliamentary Services Act to restore the power of Parliament.
The Tampin member of parliament said the government had to reform not only the Election Commission (EC) but also the parliamentary institution.
“Among the promises listed in Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) election manifesto was to restore the power of Parliament by reintroducing the Parliamentary Services Act,” said Hasan during the debate on the royal address in Dewan Rakyat today.
“The act is crucial and significant in managing matters related to the qualifications and promotions of parliamentary staff.
“More importantly it will allow the separation of parliamentary or legislative staff from the executive.”
He added that his suggestion was aimed at strengthening parliamentary democracy and ensuring that it was not tied to any government agency.
