Dungun toddler accidentally strangled to death by curtain ties

DUNGUN: A 20-month-old boy died when his neck became entangled in curtain ties at his home in Bandar Al Muktaffi Billah Shah (AMBS), near here on Saturday.

Muhammad Azhari Zul Azri was found in an unresponsive state by his mother, Noryasmin Mat Yasin, about 6.50pm.

Just before the incident, Azhari was said to be playing with his twin brother near the window. Noryasmin was performing her Asar prayers while his elder siblings, aged between three and four, were not far from the twins.

The boy was playing on the sofa next to the curtains. He is believed to have fell and in a cruel twist of fate, had his neck wrapped around the curtain tie.

His mother, after completing her prayers, was stunned to find her son unconscious and rang her husband, Zul Azri Hashim, 39.

Zul Azri, who works as a project supervisor, dashed home and rushed their child to a nearby clinic.

Dungun district police chief, Superintendent Baharudin Abdullah, confirmed the incident. He said the clinic’s personnel, upon checking the toddler, confirmed that he had died on arrival.

"The boy’s remains were taken to the Dungun Hospital at 11pm for a post-mortem examination," he said.

Baharudin said the victim's body would be examined by the coroner to verify the cause of death.
