It wasn't a spa raid, just a 'clock check'

SEREMBAN: The presence of more than 20 enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNKK) at two spas offering massage services here, attracted the attention of members of the public.

Some people thought the spas were being raided for conducting immoral activities, however, this was not the case.

The officers visited the spas to check the clocks used at the premises.

Also joining the 5pm checks at Kemayan Square and Seremban Gateway were state Health, Environment, Cooperatives and Consumerism committee chairman S Veerapan and state KPDNKK director Ain Arjuna Aziz Zaman.

Veerapan said the ministry was concern on the clocks used at spas and reflexology, health and beauty centres to ensure the operators abide by proper measurement of time in providing their services.

"Each premise must ensure that the device they use to measure time in each closed room or area is verified by Metrology Corporation Malaysia Sdn Bhd (MCM) every 12 months. Accurate measurement of time indirectly increases consumers' confidence.

"This year, state KPDNKK conducted checks at 85 spas including reflexology, health and beauty centres, and found that they abide by the regulations provided with regard to time measurement devices," he said when met after the visit, here, today.

He said premise owners who use time measurement devices that were not verified by MCM risked facing action under Section 14(6) of the Weights and Measures Act 1972, which provides for a maximum fine of RM40,000 or jail up to three years or both, upon conviction.

"Checks conducted today found both premises were not in violation of that regulation," Veerapan said, adding that members of the public who wished to lodge complaints with regard to matters such as time measurement at spa centres could do so via e-mail (e-aduan@kpdnkk.gov.my) or phone (06-6016500).

When asked why were the two spas selected for checking today, Veerapan said it was done randomly as both offered time-based services.
