Mindef to get its own Pernama store in the future

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry aims to open a Perbadanan Perwira Niaga Malaysia (Pernama) in the ministry’s headquarters in the future.

Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said a retail outlet has yet to be set up in Mindef, despite Pernama having 85 stories nationwide.

He said a timeframe has yet to be established but the ministry is actively working on it with the help od relevant parties.

The Pernama shops cater only to members of the armed forces, veterans and their families. They feature food courts, sundry shops, tailoring facilities, hair salons and others, at prices between 35 and 45 per cent cheaper than most retail outlets.

“We will try to find ways to make this work for the ministry,” he said at Pernama’s ‘35 years of excellence’ dinner celebration at the Royale Chulan Hotel here on Sunday night.

Also present were Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong; Royal Malaysian Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin; Pernama general manager Mohd Zaini Khalid, armed forces officers, veterans, and Pernama staff.

Mohamad said Pernama outlets would also be more profitable after the abolition of the Goods and Services Tax (GST)
