Health Ministry to take actions on people involved in 'miracle' coffee demo

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry is taking action against those involved in demonstrating a “miracle” coffee claimed to be able to neutralise poison and cure numerous ailments.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the demonstration showed the coffee was mixed with bleach and drunk to show its effectiveness.

“The Health Ministry has also received information that the coffee manufacturer stated on the label was fake and did not comply to labeling requirements as stipulated under the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Noor Hisham said the product had also abused the food safe guarantee logo system issued by the Food Safety and Quality Division under the Food Act 1983.

It was reported that a 30-year-old housewife nearly died when she suffered breathing problem and stomach pain several hours after she drank coffee mixed with bleach.

Dr Noor Hisham said no food operator should resort to such marketing tactic by using dangerous substances to prove a point.

He warned those who advertised their products in such irresponsible manner to dupe buyers could face full brunt of the law, adding consumers should not try any food known to be mixed with dangerous substances.

He also urged the public who had any concern regarding food safety to refer to the nearest health district or state departments or Health Ministry via its website athttp://moh.spab.gov.my or via the Food Safety and Quality Division Facebook at www.facebook.com/bkkmhq.
