Bukit Raja toll plaza damaged in thunderstorm

SHAH ALAM: Motorists at the Bukit Raja toll plaza endured several moments of panic tonight when part of the ceiling at the area collapsed in a thunderstorm.

In the incident which took place at about 9.30pm, all lanes at the toll plaza could not be accessed by vehicles from both sides of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE).

PLUS Malaysia Bhd in a statement said initial investigation found that no one was injured in the incident.

Presently, PLUS is carrying out cleaning works as well as inspection at the toll plaza.

"At the moment, three lanes to exit the highway have been open to vehicles beginning 10.40am. Other lanes will be opened in stages.

"PLUS would like to advise road users to follow PLUStrafik on Twitter for latest traffic updates on the situation at the Bukit Raja toll plaza," the statement read.

An eyewitness Yusuf Mat Barjo, 59, said he was by the roadside near the toll plaza when the incident took place.

"The wind was blowing strongly. Several minutes later I heard a loud noise. Then I saw the ceiling had collapsed.

"It started from the first lane of the toll plaza (from Bukit Raja heading towards Shah Alam) and then all the way to the last lane. It all came down," he said.

Yusof said he saw debris from the ceiling hitting a car below.

"But everyone is fine. The staff members were also directed to leave and stay away from the toll lanes," he said.

Checks found that parts of the plaza are still closed to vehicles as works are ongoing to remove pieces of the ceiling that fell down.
