MPV fails to give way to ambulance, both collide head-on

KULIM: An MPV driver’s failure to give way to an ambulance which was on its way to fetch a patient has resulted in both vehicles colliding head-on in Jalan Kulim-Bukit Mertajam here.

In the 2.30pm incident, the ambulance from Kulim Hospital was making a turn at a T-junction in Taman Cengal before the MPV from the opposite direction crashed into it.

District Police Headquarters Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Assistant Superintendent Ismail Atan said the ambulance was on its way to fetch a patient in Taman Kempas.

He said the 42-year-old MPV driver was believed to have been oblivious to the blazing siren from the ambulance even though other vehicles had stopped and given way.

“At the traffic light, a few vehicles from the middle lane had stopped to let the ambulance make the turning. However, an MPV driven by a woman, which came from the opposite direction failed to see the ambulance and crashed into it,” he said in a statement here today.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries.

The MPV driver was issued a traffic summons under Rule 10 LN 166/59 for careless driving resulting in an accident. He advised the public to give way to police escorts, ambulance and Fire & Rescue Department vehicles on duty or emergency.
