KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Health has banned three health juices, produced under Sri Saga Marketing Sdn Bhd, a company which does not exist.
Health Director Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today said checks by the Food Safety and Quality Division recently found that the company stated on the products' labels did not exist which is a violation under Section 16 of the Act Food 1983.
“Jus Al Sunnah, Jus Al Sunnah Gold and Jus Al-Sunnah Penawar products issued by Sri Saga Marketing S/B also contained dexamethasone and prednisolone, which is a steroid substance prohibited under the Food Act 1983,” he said.
Under Section 13 of the Food Act 1983, Dr Noor Hisham said it clearly states any person who provides or sells any food in or of any poisonous, damaging or harmful substance is guilty of an offense.
He added that sales of the three items, including via online, were prohibited.
Retailers who still have the products in their stock are required to them in at the nearest district health office, Dr Noor Hisham informed.
Dr Noor Hisham said the prolonged use of dexamethasone and prednisolone without professional supervision could lead to serious side-effects and complications.
Among the possible health problems are weakness of muscles, bone fragility, increased blood sugar, high blood pressure, cataract and increased risk of infections.
Dr Noor Hisham said patients with diabetes are at high risk because it can cause uncontrolled blood sugar levels and may result in serious complications.
“Those who have been using any of these products are advised to seek advice and treatment from doctors or health professionals immediately.
“However, consumers who have been taking this product for a long time are urged not to stop using it abruptly because it can also cause health problems due to the sudden change in intake pattern,” he advised.
He said they must immediately seek help from a medical professional for evaluation and advice, otherwise they may experience a sudden decrease in blood pressure that can also be harmful.
