Educational institutions to have UNESCO club

IPOH: A United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Club will be set up at all secondary schools, public universities, polytechnics and vocational colleges nationwide from next year.

Minister of Education (KPM) Maszlee Malik, who is also Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO president, said this was aimed at promoting sustainable development as a culture and lifestyle.

He said education is the most effective vehicle in educating the people to promote peaceful living, rejecting violence, war and conflict and subsequently safeguarding development sustainability.

“This is among KPM’s efforts to ensure that the world today and tomorrow will be sustainable towards the environment,” he said after opening the 2018 UNESCO Malaysia Day celebration at the Sultan Azlan Shah Roundabout, Meru here today.

Earlier in his speech, Maszlee said that UNESCO Day this year was to showcase the role that Malaysia plays in supporting the UN body’s aspirations and visions in particular the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

“SDGs has put youth central in the development agenda to ensure social and economic well-being, cultural and environmental preservation and protection.

“I believe youth today are not only apprentices but leaders of today for a better tomorrow. That is why, efforts by youth should be celebrated and showcased at all levels,” Maszlee noted.

At the event, Mazlee also received two latest recognitions from UNESCO for “Memory of the World“, namely, the ‘Hikayat Panji’ and ‘Kitab Ilmu Bedil’ manuscripts which were handed over by Jakarta Office UNESCO director, Shahbaz Khan. - BERNAMA
