Firemen rescue family trapped inside car

BINTULU: A family of five faced a harrowing moment when the car they were in became stranded in rising floodwaters at Jalan Tanjung Kidurong early this morning.

The family, travelling in a Proton Wira, were on their way from Sungai Plan to the city centre when a one-metre-deep flash flood struck Pantain ABF near here at about 2am.

It is understood that the car’s engine failed after its driver attempted to drive through the floodwaters.

Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohamad Meramit confirmed the incident, saying seven firemen were rushed to the scene at 2.18am to rescue the victims.

“As soon as they arrived, the firemen rescued a man, his wife and three children before bringing them to a safe location near Taman Matahari,” he told the New Straits Times Press when contacted today.

“The victims were later taken home by their family members,” he added.

In a separate incident, Mohamad said, a van was left stranded in the same area but its driver managed to get himself to safety.
