DAP to introduce code of ethics for elected reps

GEORGE TOWN: DAP is in the midst of drafting a code of ethics to ensure its state assemblymen and members of parliament discharge their duties professionally.

DAP vice-chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the code of ethics, once implemented, must be adhered to by all elected representatives.

"The code of ethics will be serve as a guideline on how elected representatives should carry out their duties.

"When we are in the government, there are things we cannot do like using government resources for the party. These things should not happen," he said during the state-level National Sports Day 2018 event here today.

Chow, however, did not say when the code of ethics would be completed.

He was commenting on an incident involving DAP assemblyman for Pengkalan Batu Norhizam Hassan Baktee, who was embroiled in a shouting match with villagers of Kampung Pulau Nibong on Tuesday.

Chow said elected representatives must be able to "keep their cool" when facing confrontations.

Chow, who is also Penang chief minister, added that he faced similar situations during townhall sessions and public forums in the state.

“As chief minister, I have to be patient for three to four hours.

“We must control our emotions. Otherwise, we will be the victims of our own emotions,” he added.

Chow said the party will not take action against Norhizam as the latter had already issued an apology.

Meanwhile, about 60,000 Penangites have the state-level National Sports Day at the Penang Youth and Sports Department headquarters and state district offices here today.

Present were Penang state secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus and Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee.
