Decision to terminate MMC-Gamuda MRT2 contract made by Cabinet, says Guan Eng

KUALA LUMPUR: The decision to terminate MMC-Gamuda's contract to build the underground tunnel of the Mass Rapid Transit Line 2 (MRT2) was not solely done by the Ministry of Finance.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today said, “It was a Cabinet decision. If there are any changes, it must be decided by the cabinet again."

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, here, today, he said he was not in the country for the last Cabinet meeting as he was in Bali, Indonesia.

“I will be attending this week's Cabinet meeting and make my comments after that," Lim said when asked if the government is planning to review the decision to terminate the contract.

The announcement to terminate the contract was made by Lim on Oct 7, in which he had said all unfinished underground works at MRT2 will be re-tendered via an international open tender process.

This led to an outcry in which there were claims that 20,000 workers would lose their jobs.

Following that, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government would reconsider the decision.
