More than 200 gather outside MACC HQ in support of Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: More than 200 people gathered outside the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters tonight in a show of support for Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid was arrested by the MACC today over a probe into suspected abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money-laundering.

Zahid is being detained overnight before being charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court at 8am tomorrow.

His supporters began gathering since 8.30pm. Most of the supporters were garbed in orange T-shirts with the words ‘Lokap SPRM’ emblazoned on them, to mark Zahid’s detention.

They comprised mostly Umno members as well as residents of Bagan Datuk, where Zahid is the member of parliament.

Also with them were Zahid’s wife Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis, his family members, as well as Umno leaders.

Umno Supreme Council member, Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, meanwhile said Zahid’s arrest was “politically-motivated” and geared towards destroying Umno’s unity.

He said the efforts to weaken the party would not dampen its aim of continuing to serve the people.
